I keep hearing that now is a good time to get a great deal on an RV. Some dealerships are offering 40% off sticker price on their websites. Would it be unreasonable (or rude) to expect a 45 to 50 percent discount when I go shopping for my first RV next week? Also, any advice on buying an RV during a recession would be greatly appreciated! Would buying a Fleetwood be too risky? (4/2/09)
ANSWER Thanks for asking your question on our Ask An RVing Question Page.
Let me answer your first question on whether asking for a bigger discount on an RV is rude or unreasonable, if it is done right it is neither rude nor unreasonable to ask for more of a discount. In fact, most RV salespeople never expect their customers to take the first sales price they are given. The prices for RVs are negotiable, especially in the current economic circumstances. Most RV dealers really want and need to sell their current inventory of RVs.
The RV Industry is in a state of economic crisis right now. This crisis has forced some RV Manufacturers and RV Dealerships to go out of business, so RV Dealerships are very happy to have customers on their lots looking for RVs and are more than willing to negotiate, even on their already deeply discounted RVs.
Negotiation is an art and not all people are good at it. For example in my family, I am not the negotiator, my wife is, why? Because she is an excellent negotiator. She has negotiated the deals on every car and RV that we have ever owned and we have gotten some great deals. Sadly, had I done the negotiation, we would not have gotten such great deals (we all have to know our limitations). You might want to take a moment to review My
