I'm about to buy a 87 Southwind and am wondering if there is any problems I should know about. Something that may be an inherited issue on that specific year and model.
ANSWER: Greetings Jenna thanks for submitting your question on our Ask An RV Question Page.
The first thing you need to know is that there has been 2 Recalls on 1987 Southwinds. Please click on the links below to get more details on the Recalls (the links will open up in a new window so please turn off your pop-up blocker).
STEERING:WHEEL AND HANDLE BAR RECALL
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:BATTERY:CABLES RECALL
You should check with the current owners of the motorhome to make sure that these recalls have been taken care of. As far as any other inherent problems, I am not aware of any.
Since you are looking at a used Motorhome; the best way to discover any current problems with the motorhome is to conduct a Used RV Inspection. Without a used RV inspection, your leisure time may be spent repairing problems on the RV that could have been discovered during a pre-purchase RV inspection. As the old saying goes "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" (you gotta love those old sayings).
Below are the links to the two sections of my Used RV Inspection Guidelines. You should use these guidelines while inspecting the RV. Feel free to print them out and take them with you.
RV Inspection Section 1, Documentation, Exterior and Interior
RV Inspection Section 2, Engine Inspection and Test Drive
I hope that this information is helpful to you.
