What are exhaust Brakes?

ANSWER: Thanks for submitting your question on our Ask An RV Question Page.

To put into simple terms an Exhaust Brake attaches to the exhaust of a vehicle that has a Diesel Engine. When the Exhaust Brake is activated it restricts the flow of exhaust gasses leaving the engine. The restricted exhaust gasses increases the back pressure in the engine which in turn increases resistance against the Diesel Engine's pistons which slows the engine down and aids in braking and keeping the vehicle under control.

The use of Exhaust Brakes on Diesel powered RV's, Semi trucks, etc. allows you to use the service brakes less which helps them last longer.

If you have a Diesel Powered Motorhome or Tow Vehicle that is not currently equipped with Exhaust Brakes you can purchase After-Market Exhaust Braking systems to install on your Diesel powered vehicle.
