What Weight Tent Trailer Can My SUV Tow?

by Dawn
(Ontario)

Hello,

I'm trying to find out if my 2003 Mazda Tribute can tow a tent trailer and up to what weight?

ANSWER: Greetings Dawn thanks for submitting your question on our Ask An RV Question Page.

If your Tribute is a 4 cylinder with a manual transmission it can tow a maximum of 1000 pounds.

If it is a 6 cylinder with an automatic transmission without the factory towing option it can tow a maximum of 2000 pounds, if it has the factory towing option it can tow a maximum of 3500 pounds.

Depending on the size of the tent trailer their Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) (In other words when the trailer is loaded to capacity and ready for camping) can range between 1000 to 7000 pounds.

Remember when looking for tent trailers you need to look at their GVWR rating and not their Unloaded Vehicle Weight Rating (also known as dry weight Rating) as you will be towing the trailer behind your vehicle when it is loaded.

For more information on RV weights you should read the article Trailer and RV Weight Demystified located in our RV Lifestyle Articles Section.

I hope that this information has been helpful to you.
