Weighing Your RV to Determine Proper Tire Inflation

We just put on new tires 225/70 19.5 tires the tag inside says 80# psi but other places I have read must weigh the unit to what psi to run this unit also has airbags on the rear that say the minimum is 50 max 100 please advise as what to do 30ft coachman Mirada 2001 is there a general rule.

ANSWER Hi Phil, the simple answer to your question is yes, you should weigh your RV to determine what the proper inflation should be for your RV tires. The tires you have on your RV have a maximum weight rating. In other words the tires are only rated to carry so much weight. The simple rule of thumb is the higher the weight, the higher the PSI is going to have to be in your

The lower the weight the lower the PSI should be in the tire. Of course, the PSI required varies by the tire manufacturer.

So to really know what PSI you should use, you would weigh your RV and determine the weight each tire is carrying and then fill the tire up to the tire manufacturers spec for that weight. Sounds simple, doesn't it? Well, to be honest, it is not that simple, in fact, the majority of RVers have never weighed their RVs.

Also, a lot of RVers just keep their tires at the max air pressure that the tire manufacturers recommend and then constantly complain about the rough ride of their RV. What these

RVers do not realize is that they may have exceeded the GVWR-Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of their trailer or motorhome.

The GVWR is the maximum weight that the chassis of the RV is rated to carry. The GVWR is determined by the RV chassis manufacturer. If you exceed the GVWR you are putting undue stress on the chassis and its components. This could cause a catastrophic failure of the chassis or one of its components.
