We Got Our Motorhome Stuck In Soggy Grass, How Can We Get It Out?

I live in Alabama and we recently had a lot of rain and my Class A is park in my back yard and when I tried to move it out all my wheels just spin, and I don't want to bury it any more than I have so any suggestions on how to get it out that is without calling a tow truck.

Thanks

ANSWER Thanks for submitting your question on our Ask An RV Question Page.

First off, do not feel embarrassed or dumb for getting your RV stuck. There are a lot of RVers reading this right now saying to themselves "Been There, Done That".

You do not say how far you have buried your wheels in the wet turf. I really do not have a lot of suggestions for you, some people try to put 2x4s and plywood under the rear wheels so that the tires gain traction. But there have also been some serious injuries caused by using that method when the 2x4s and plywood come shooting out from the back of the tires. This method also has the potential of severely damaging the undercarriage of your motorhome.

The only thing that I can suggest is if you have two big pieces of carpet that you do not need anymore, try placing them in front of the rear tires if you are trying to go forward or in back of the rear tires if you are trying to back it out.

How do I know the carpet trick works? Well let's just say that I am one of those RVers that have been there and done that. About 30 years ago (early in my RVing experience) I got our motorhome stuck in the sand near a beach. I am not going to go into details on how I actually got myself in that situation, but I did. We had two large pieces of carpet we used at our campsites. I took them out of the RV and put them as close to the rear wheels as possible and put the RV in drive and lightly hit the accelerator. The tires pulled the carpet under them and gave me enough traction to get moving and out of that area.

Of course we used this method on sand, but I see no reason why the carpet will not work on wet grass, it will give the tires something dry to grab onto. Just a hint once you get moving, don't stop until you are off the wet turf. If this does not work, then you are going to probably have to get another vehicle or tow truck to assist you in pulling the RV out.

I wish you the best of luck in getting unburied. If any of our visitors have other suggestions for you they can leave them by clicking on the add a comment link located near the bottom of this page.

Happy RVing
