The Windows are Falling Out of My 2005 Roadtrek 210 Poplar RV

by M Bell
()

My rear side crank out windows are coming apart and the crank out glass has fallen out. The glass seems to be coming unglued.

This has happened on one side and is beginning to happen on the other side. For safety sake I now have the taped in with duct tape.

I would like to know the solution to this problem and how I can go about replacing or repair these windows.

Thanks M Bell

ANSWER: Hi M Bell, the problem you are experiencing with the windows on your Roadtrek RV seems to be a continuing issue for them. In fact back in 2000 a recall was issued by the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). The recall was for 1999-2000 Roadtrek 170s, Roadtrek 190s and 1998-2000 Roadtrek 200s.

The NHTSA stated in the recall:

"Summary:
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MOTOR HOMES BUILT ON DODGE 2500/3500 VAN CHASSIS AND ON CHEVROLET G-CUT AWAY VAN CHASSIS. THESE MOTOR HOMES WERE BUILT USING FRAMELESS WINDOWS. SOME OF THESE WINDOWS MAY HAVE NOT BONDED CORRECTLY.

Consequence:
WHEN THE WINDOWS ARE OPENED/CLOSED, OR WHEN LITTLE PRESSURE IS APPLIED TO THE VENT GLASS, THE BONDING CAN GIVE UP PRODUCING A DELAMINATION BETWEEN VENT GLASS AND ALUMINUM.

Remedy:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE AFFECTED WINDOWS WITH NEW ONES."

I understand that this recall does not include your 2005 Roadtrek, but it should also be noted that after doing a little bit of research I have found that other owners of your year and model Roadtrek are also experiencing window fall outs.

Since this still seems to be a problem with some Roadtrek RVs I would suggest that you contact your nearest Roadtrek Dealer and see if they can steer you in the right direction on how get the problem resolved. I doubt that Roadtrek will cover the repairs. because without a recall they are not obligated to pay for the repairs unless they do it as a customer goodwill gesture.

If nothing else your local Roadtrek Dealer can tell you where to get the replacement parts and/or refer you to a local repair shop who can replace the glass and re-secure the remaining pieces of glass so they do not also fall out.

I would be interested to hear from any other Roadtrek Owners who may also be experiencing this problem the windows in their Roadtrek.

Roadtrek windows falling out
by: katywoz

The passenger side awning window fell out....I was parked so have the window. Seems to be a common problem. I don't have the answers, but my brother was able to make the missing slide bracket and wheel with a 3D printer. May be an option for others....see your local library for 3D printers.

Just lost the window along interstate. When we opened it last night, a bracket fell to the ground that fits on the roller. We glued that back on but at some point the window fell out. Just found a metal strip that fits horizontally.

Roadtrek Side Window Redux
by: Jimmy D

I have a 2003 Roadtrek 190 Popular. I love it, but the side windows continue to annoy the heck out of me. Last year I re-glued both channel brackets on both side windows using Gorilla glue only to have them come loose again. I've picked up a 3M adhesive designed to attach metal to glass to do the job right this time, but I've lost one of the 3" aluminum channel brackets. I've followed two of the suggested links in comments above and gotten in touch with DK Hardware, all to no avail. Help! Anyone have any suggestions?

Roadtrek Window Problem
by: UTAH KID

A replacement bracket can be made quite simply by using a 2" length of 3/4" aluminum square tubing and slotting one side of it to accept the roller and arm. I attached this to the glass using the industrial strength nylon Velcro available at Ace Hardware. Works great and eliminates the expansion coefficient between the glass and aluminum (which is why adhesives eventually fail)
The tempered dark grey glass can be ordered online from Peninsula glass in Washington state for about $70 plus shipping. You will have to measure the inside of your frame. Be careful to get the radius right. Attach the aluminum top piece with heavy duty black double sided tape rated for 30 pounds also at Ace or True Value.
This has totally solved MY RT Nightmare.

2004 170 Popular Window busted
by: Annie

I just bought a 2004 170 Popular, both crank out windows were missing, found the short drivers side glass in the back but the longer passenger is gone. It's about 34" does anyone know where to get the glass or new windows to fit. The only window to purchase all are the wrong size. By the way Roadtrek is in receivership though I left a message and he called me back saying it was Hehr windows, still no help. I'm willing to put 2 new windows in if I can get them for 400 - $500, I just can't afford custom at 1200.

Road Trek Woes
by: Backpack to RV camper

We have a 2004 Road Trek 190 Versatile. We have had the same issues with the rear side windows. Passenger side, the metal slides have come unglued. Fortunately, they came off while parked in storage. I was able to use JB Weld Epoxy and so far they are working fine.

Not so fortunate on the passenger side. This one came completely off losing the glass and both slides, again fortunate it was parked for the season. I will JB Weld the slides but am at a quandary as to how to reattach the glass. I've read articles recommending double face tape and electrical tape to using epoxy. I am still evaluating the best method to repair this breakdown.

Found possible aluminum channel on amazon

I am having a similar problem, lower glass detached from my 03 D170P rear driver side window. I saved the glass, but one of the roller channels is missing.

Excited to have found a possible replacement channel piece on amazon:
It is sold as "Casement Window Operator Channel Guide - 13-1/2 in long, Aluminum" for $4 + $8 shipping:

I will post again here if I try it out. I may also try printing one.

Just discovered windows leak-need to replace the gaskets around the window and if I can find the cranks. This is for the back side windows and the 2 windows above the side door. The actual glass is good but I see that the glass can fall out after reading all these posts. Any ideas/thoughts contacted CL Laurence trying to find the right client of theirs. In the Northeast if anyone has had success.

by: Larry

Recently picked up a 2008 210 Versatile, have it sitting in driveway while taking care of things to prep it to go away, opening the roof vent and side windows during the 90 degree days here for some air. Opened right rear window today and hinge let go, whole glass moved out from van. Lots of good info on this page, things to try. Just uanother hiccup I guess. Now I have to watch for issues with the others.

My windows fell out but I retained all the part and duct-taped them until I could find a reasonable solution. Happily, I found a window company that had RV experience to reglue them. Very simple repair in a few hours - about $200. One year later still functioning well.

Final Update
by: Doug in KC

Posted June 2018 - As an update to my 2 other posts, I was able to purchase the lost repair parts from DKHARDWARE https://www.dkhardware.com/. They carry the CR Laurence hardware to repair the windows in the Roadtrek RV's. You may need to make some phone calls and deal with some difficult people, but you can get what you need if you are diligent My parts cost about $60 after S&H.
For Installation of the parts, don't waste your time trying to do it yourself. Go to a glass shop that specializes in RV windows. Labor to dis-assemble and re-glue both side windows was $125. Net result is 2 fully functional, "as new" windows for under $200. Don't spend $1000+ on a new window plus installation!!!

I was unable to find the little slip hing as well as everyone else. I have not had luck gluing the ones I still have back on either.

The far rear passenger side window fell out, and I just found out I can order a new window for $1000, not including instillation. Isn't that exciting for a 20 X 24" window.

My 2004 RT Popular 190 rear side wind out windows have become unglued from the top again!!! Had these replaced with parts from RT and installed. Y RT dealer 3 years ago, and the same thing has happened again. RT happy to sell me new window assembly for $500 (plus shipping and installation) each. For some reason this does not seem like a good idea. Searching desparately for glass company that will take this on. Any advice?

RE: 2001 Roadtrek 190 Popular
by: Doug in KC

Hello all - this is to update my earlier post. I was able to "track" down my part. CR Laurence does not sell replacement parts directly, but the parts can be purchased retail through DK Hardware https://www.dkhardware.com/. It took several confusing emails and with CR Laurence and DK Hardware, and a couple of phone calls, but I was finally able to replace my "RVTRAK" window parts needed to make my window operational again. If you are still having problems finding parts, I suggest you take this approach, and do your homework, you can have success. By the way, my 'small $5 part' cost $40 + $20 S&H.
Good Luck and Happy Roadtrekking!!

Poor ROADTREK Customer Backup
by: grampa Brian

Lost the rear passenger side awning glass section and the back window damaged in wind storm and needs replacement. Someone put plexiglass in for each and we bought the unit "as is" but now find out you CAN"T recertify it without the opening back window (2000 Popular 200 Chev)and auto safety glass in each case. Gonna be expensive and difficult to find the replacements by the looks of it. ROADTREK is NOT standing behind their products as they should, and the dealers don't give a damn once they have sold you a unit. As per usual, it's "buyer beware"!!!

by: Doug in KC

Our CR Laurence window operators came unglued from the glass also. Luckily I caught it just in time to keep from breaking any glass, however I have lost one of the little metal tracks. I've glued the other 3 back to the glass with Gorilla glue, but one has come undone - thanks for the tip about the epoxy at the auto parts store!.
I've contacted Roadtrek directly, Two Roadtrek dealers, CR Laurence, who referred me to 'any local glass shop (HA!), and two local glass shops. None of them have anything that will work. I'm a fairly handy guy, and thought that if I could find something 'close' I could make it work - so far no good. One Roadtrek dealer offered to sell me a whole new window, but I only need a 50 cent part. Please keep this thread going!!! This is ridiculous!!

Falling awning window RT Popular 190 2003
by: Anonymous

Same thing here, but we caught it before it hit the ground. The dealer said call Roadtrek. Roadtrek said to call an auto window glass shop. The one I called said they didn't work on exotic RV windows. Seems like a pretty straightforward re-glue, so I and a handy friend will try with a recommended rubber sealant/adhesive. Ours seems to work by inserting the top of the glass pane into a rubber sleeve, first pushing glue into sleeve, then glass, then letting it cure.

Rear driver side louvre window fell out on 2003 190 V
by: RGMartin

Didn't break. Re-glued the aluminum channel onto glass, but cannot get it to stay in place with the runners, and just falls out. Seems like a part missing? All I want is some help about how to remount the window. Dealer no help, and auto glass place dealer recommended doesn't know much about Road trek.

I'll call Roadtrek today. I just got this vehicle, and maybe already getting the dreaded rv service runaround that so many complain about. Hope not, but there are so many unique parts in this vehicle that it seems no one actually knows how it works!

Stop windows from falling out
by: Anonymous

Ive had the same problem with my Roadtrek window slipping out. Luckily it fell on dirt n didnt break.

I epoxied it back but also added small sheet metal screws near the bottom of the track on all the other window tracks to act as a stop in case the window disengages from the aluminum bracket. This will stop the windows from sliding out of the track.

2002 Roadtrek, windows leak and right rear fell out. Now all windows on drivers side calked shut and taped to keep glass from falling out. Right rear glued to metal strip with Gorilla Glue epoxy,so it's operable. For safety I tape both sides to camper when traveling. Hey, make sure you tell your story to anyone who will listen. CR Laurence needs to be out of business.

Our rear side window fell out and we had it repaired . Now the other rear side window bracket became unglued from the glass and we are missing the other bracket because it fell off. We have contacted Roadtrek--they said call CR Laurence Co who made the windows for the Roadtrek. Cr Laurence has cut all ties with Roadtrek--they said to call Roadtrek back. We had an RV dealer call and Roadtrek told him to call CR Laurence. The only solution is to put a new window in--but all we need is a bracket. Any ideas?
