The Power Converter on My RV is Not Providing Full Power Unless I Smack It!

by Gary Pike

Hi,

I have 2002 Terry pull trailer. My trouble is when I plug the trailer into house power everything works but the lights are dim. When I check the batteries on the panel they show half to three quarters. When I give the converter a smack the panel shows full charge. It makes a funny noise when I smacked it. Then the lights are brighter. Is it a converter problem? Could you let me know............................Gary

ANSWER: Greetings Gary thanks for submitting your question on our Ask An RV Question Page.

First let me thank you for giving me such a good detailed description of your actual problem. Based on your description there are two possibilities on what is causing the problem.

The first could be loose wiring at the converter. Check all the connections at the converter to make sure that they are tight and clean. Clean and tighten as needed and see if this solves your problem.

The second cause could be an internal problem in the converter itself. If this is the case do not try to open up the converter and fix it yourself there are no do-it-yourselfer repairable parts inside the converter. Take it in and have a Certified RV Technician check it out. The Technician will be able to tell you if you need a new Power Converter or not.

Just a side note here: I suspect that if you smacked me like you did the Converter that I would also make a funny noise as a result; so please refrain from smacking your converter in the future. :-)
