Why You Should Cover Your RV During The Winter

I keep reading conflicting articles on Winter RV storage in mild to moderate snow areas, like eastern PA. and thought you might be able to lend a hand. We have a 30' Coachman Mirada that is stored outside. Aside from the normal winterizing of the RV systems....what else should we do to protect the RV?

Do covers work? or what about the shrink-wrapping? I am most interested in protecting the rubber roof, and preventing leaks on the inside.

Thanks, Karen

ANSWER: Hi Karen, I am going to assume that you have already read our Winterizing Your Motorhome article?

I am a firm believer in covering your RV whenever it is not in use for 2 weeks or more. Properly designed and installed RV Covers and RV Tire Protectors will protect your RV regardless of what time of year it is.

Covering your RV protects it from the harmful effects of the sun, rain, wind, snow, etc. which can prolong that new RV look that everyone loves. All the rubber items on your RV such as tires, slide out seals, etc. are covered slowing their deterioration. Having to replace RV Tires due to dry rot is expensive. So, the cost of buying a good quality RV Cover and RV Tire Protectors more than pays for itself after using it for a couple of seasons.

Take a look at the video below to see how easy it is to cover even a large RV:

Here are the RV Covers available from ADCO.

When looking for an RV Cover you should shop around. Here are a few places that I suggest that you look.

I do not know a lot about the one time use shrink wrap cover kits that are available for RVs except that the majority of them require the use of a heat gun to shrink the material around the RV. A heat gun if used improperly has the potential to cause some serious damage to the exterior of an RV.

I hope that this was helpful.

Tarps work
by: Anonymous

I live in Idaho...very very cold. I use simple tarps to cover my coach. I, of course, fill tanks with antifreeze before I let it stand. But, I don't spend huge dollars to cover it. Harbor Freight has great buys on tarps that one can get and use for cover.

Now, I live in my coach and I 'skirt' it with 1" hard Styrofoam sheets that I cut to fit.

Good luck.
