How to replace an RV Holding Tank Valve

My gray water dump valve will not close all the way. This 5th wheel is only a year old and I noticed this the first time I used it. The valve closes about 3/4 of the way and then feels spongy. You can push hard enough to close it but it pushes back out.

I tried turning it and reclosing but that does not help. I confirmed by pouring water down the shower that it won't hold in this position. It's not possible to tell how far away from the drain the valve is but since it's the gray water I don't think it could be toilet paper from the black water tank clogging it.

I thought maybe I would put a hose down the shower on the inside while working the valve back and forth to see if anything is plugging it. I'm wondering if the valve itself could fail and act this way but since the trailer is almost new I wouldn't think it would be bad.

ANSWER: Yes the RV Waste Valve could be broken or there could be debris in the valve slide not allowing it to close properly. Either way you are going to have remove the valve to either clean it or replace it.

Removing the RV Waste Valve is not that complicated, The video below by RVing Expert Mark Polk walks you through the process of replacing or repairing an RV Waste Valve.
