I Can't Find the Electrical Converter in My 5th Wheel Trailer

by Tony
(Cartersville, GA)

I have bought a 1997 Jayco 28 foot Fifth Wheel Travel Trailer. When I turn on more than two interior lights they cycle off and on. Also the house battery does not charge. I think there may be something wrong with the voltage converter but I haven't been able to find it. Please help.

ANSWER: Greetings Tony thanks for submitting your question on our Ask An RV Question Page.

When it comes to 5th wheels and Travel Trailers the manufacturers do a very good job of hiding the Electric Converters , fuses and breakers.

The first place I would start is by checking your outside storage compartments as one of your storage compartments may be dedicated to the electrical controls of your trailer.

If you do not find the Converter in an outside compartment you will need to start searching inside in cabinets, under couches, etc.

Here is the problem, once you find the Converter, there is not much that a do-it-yourselfer can do to repair it other than to look for blown fuses etc. In your case, before I do anymore hunting for the converter I would check the House Batteries for proper electrolyte levels and loose battery connections.

Another problem could be that the battery is bad and no longer taking a charge. You also do not tell me if the problem you are experiencing happens when you are plugged into shore power. When you are plugged in the converter takes over from
the house batteries to provide 12 volt DC power to your trailer.

Unfortunately there are too many variables with the problems you are experiencing for me to even confirm for sure that the problem is with your Converter or your house batteries.

Sorry I could not be of more help.
