Class A on a Sprinter Chassis 15 mpg
by: John G Root Jr

I have a 2011 Winnebago VIA 25R. It is a Class A on a Sprinter chassis. I have an average of over 120,000 miles of 14.5 mpg, and I can usually get 15 mpg over long trips if I do very little driving at 70 mph and mostly 60 or less mph

Just finished a 16,650 km two month trip across Canada. Ford E450 6.8L 24’ Leprechaun. Lowest 8.5 - 100-110 kph facing a brisk wind on a rainy day. Highest 12.6 - 60-80 kph on PEI. OVERALL cost - approx. $.50/km. No complaints. That 6.8 is a beast uphill/downhill/against the wind etc. Can keep up to traffic flow under any conditions!

2002 Volkswagen\Winnebago Vista 21b Class C
Motorhome. 25',no slides,front wheel drive,4

2.8 liter regulator gas fuel injected VR-6
201 horsepower with a 4-speed auto tranny.
Pulls great but downshifts into passing on hills.
*** 8.5 - 14 miles per gallon ***
How I maximize mpg: Turn off cruise; keep it around 55-60 MPH; Travel light; Let it slow down going up hills; Don't tow; Upgrade to a higher
fuel octane. This rig is based on the VW Eurovan, which is rated for 17 MPG on the highway.
Overall: I like it a lot. I'm a VW guy!! It has the ability to run 70+ MPH, but sucks gas doing so. Comfortable and roomy. Big bathroom with separate shower. Suits our needs. Con:Gas mileage.

2017 V6 turbo diesel purchased new, first 20,000 miles 12-13 MPG, now getting 13-15 depending on speed more so than hills. Fuel costs and service are higher plus DEF fluid. I'm guessing a gas powered rig getting a couple miles less per gallon would run about the same costs per mile but I love the torque going up hills without effort or loss of speed. Mercedes offers 100K drive train warrantee which rocks! Have 8,000 mile trip coming up this summer and expect millage to improve as we get closer to 50K miles. The sprinter series are bullet proof and average 14-15 MPG on rigs under 25 ft long.

by: Traveling Man

2001 Safari Trek, model 2830 and it has the 7.4 l Vortec engine. 290 horsepower at 4000 RPM and 410 foot pounds at 3200 RPM. I rarely if ever get above 2000 RPM and that's where my fuel economy lies. I prefer to keep it under 65 miles an hour, preferably 55 that's where I get about 12 to 13 miles to the gallon.

My Trek is 29 foot 3 in from bumper to bumper and I love every inch of it! It is built like a tank and drives like a dream. I have yet to see anything new on the market that I would consider as a replacement. The only thing that could possibly entice me would be something with a tag axle and it would have to be of the same quality as the Trek.

by: Dan Baxley

Update to a previous posting: 12,000 miles later in newly rebuilt 454 Chevy engine. MH is 28-30' Revcon, front wheel drive, 12-15,000 GVW. Started out getting 5.5 MPG average traveling from Northern California to Oregon and Oregon Coast -- lots of mountains, on around and in between. After initial break-in it went up to 6.5 mpg. Now, after several thousands miles we have never been able to 8 mpg, averaging 7.8 MPG. What is confusing is that the old engine, same MH, was averaging 9.4 MPG and we had gotten 11 on a better trip, so what gives? I believe it is the cheaper, bad gas they are selling us. Spiking real gas with Alcohol. Another person getting 3-4 MPG better with their Toyota in their first 100,000 miles than in their last 40,000 miles. I don't think it is the engines that are changing but the stupid gas they are selling us.

Motorhome. It has a V 10 engine with a six speed transmission. I've put about 4000 miles on it and at 63-65 Mph I get 8-8.5 mpg. Pulling a 6X8 trailer in tow haul mode I got 8.3 mpg so basically no difference. The engine runs about 2400rpm @ 63 mph which I believe is too high. The engine rpm in tow haul mode was the same. Ford says this is normal fuel economy and normal rpm. I disagree because I had a 99 winnebago Spirit 31 ft with the same engine and four speed transmission and I would get 9-10 mpg at 65-70 mph. Where do you go to get the facts?

Hello, I have a 1997 40' Holiday Rambler Navigator with a single rear axle. It has a Cummins M11 red top rated at 450 HP. There is no EGR and it does have a computer so it is a celect. Has a six speed 4020 Allison heavy duty trans. I'm not sure of the final gear but it will scare you on an open road. Talking 95+ and wasn't at max revs and showed no disposition to not get to full governed rpm. I just didn't feel it was worth the risk as the semi who decided not to let me pass was not up to the task... In any event I drive around 67 - 68 mph in low side of power band and get 9.5 miles per gallon without the generator and all water/holding tanks empty. With generator running both a/c units on and the wife cooking it looses about 1 mpg. Happens a lot here in Fl. which is mostly flat. We have checked this on three diferent occasions as people don't believe it. Had us double checking our math !!! Each time it comes out the same. Tire pressures set at max. 110 fronts 105 rears cold. They Are 195/75-22.5 on aluminum Alcoa wheels. Fully loaded this unit tops out at 42500 lbs. I put it on the scales and hjow I travel is 38,200ish. Hope this helps.

I have a V8 Chevy on the workhorse chassis and the Allison 6 speed transmission. I tow a 4WD Jeep Liberty and, unless the views are scenic, I cruise at 65 to 70 mph, downshift and increase the RPM as I start up hills to keep my speed up as much as possible. I pass way more trucks, RV's and of course motorcycles than pass me. I also live in the west so every trip includes traveling over mountains. With that said you can see why I've only gotten 6.5 - 7 MPG average on each tank of gas over the last 20,000 miles. Yes I could save $20 on gas and take an extra couple of hours to get where I'm going but my time off the road is much more valuable to me than the cost of the gas.

I have pulled a Jayco SO14 camper weighing 3000 pounds from Phoenix, AZ to Walker, MN 12 times since 2003 (a total of 41,640+ miles). This trip has almost always been at GCWR with a lot of 3 speed transmission use (no OD) in the mountains and hills, AC usage, and the usual slows and stops of 55 to 65 MPH secondary highways.

Using both the onboard computer and manual fuel/distance computation the Jeep has consistently averaged 14.1 MPG over the years.

These were overloaded out of the factory. I rolled around at about 10,700lbs "wet" and loaded with gear......too heavy...oh well.....luckily I drive slow.
Best I did was a midnight run down Hwy 5 to LA from Santa Cruz, CA. Had a tail wind, and drove 52mph, and got 10.2mpg on that leg.
Typically got 8.5 to 9.
Prior to switching to Edelbrok, the old Carter 2bl gave me 7.5mpg.

Fuel mileage

I have a 03 Holiday Rambler, 40 foot, Cummins 330 horsepower diesel motorhome with an Allison six speed automatic transmission. If I don't run the generator and keep my speed around 60 mph I can get 11 mpg. I cannot stress how important it is to take into consideration the wind and if the road is level or very hilly. That being said, I have gotten as low as 6 mpg when traveling in Colorado and climbing the Rockies. Speed is another big factor. If I run 70 then my mileage stays around 9 mpg. That's a 20 percent drop for 10 mph but it's a personal choice. I also have noticed that if I use a diesel additive every other tank full, it seems to make the engine run better and to average a little better mpg.

I put Archoil friction modifier in it but haven't had a chance to take a trip with it. Check Jay Leno garage on youtube archoil. I put it in my trailblazer and it helped my milage. They don't tout it as increasing mileage but if has helped. I put it in tranny and power steering. Will be interesting if it helps. http://www.archoil.com/

454 GAS MILLEAGE IMPROVEMENT, DO !
by: MANNY

OK, I HAD MY 454 GEORGIE BOY, 1976 BACK IN THE 80'S AND REMOVED THE #78 CARB JETS IN THE ROCHESTER CARB to 72's, CHANGED THE FLOAT FROM A STYROFOAM TO A BRASS FLOAT AND RECALIBRATED THE FLOAT. THIS CHANGED THE 7 TO 8 MPG IN THE CITY TO ABOUT 10 AND ON THE HIGHWAY TO ABOUT 12. I JUST PURCHASED AN 88 ITASCA SUNCRUISE AND THE FIRST THING I AM DOING IS THE SAME I DID ON THE 76 GEORGIE BOY,. IN ORDER NOT TO WASTE GAS ON A 454 OR "ANY" OTHER ENGINE, IF IT IS PUMPED BY A MECHANICAL PUMP, INSTALL A FUEL PRESSURE REDUCER/RESTRICTOR AND PUT THE DIAL TO ABOUT 5 POUNDS, INCREASE AS THE ENGINE NEEDS IT. THE FACTORY PRESSURE IS BETWEEN 10 TO 11 BUT OUT OF THOSE POUNDS OF PRESSURE, YOU WASTE AT LEAST 3 POUNDS EQUALLING IN FUEL AS UNBURNED FUEL, STRAIGHT OUT OF THE PIPES. TRY IT Y'ALL LIKE IT.

I've got an older Itasca Phasar (Lesharo) 17 foot that has had the drive train swapped to a '97 Buick V6. They originally had a junky Renault 4 banger (get out of the way) that is notorious for breaking down in the middle of nowhere. Not a bad RV overall, but it's an ongoing project.

On our several camping trips with it we've gotten about 14-16 mpg with decent power. The cab is a little noisy with road noise, but I guess I'll deal with it. I can't imagine getting under 10mpg on an RV for as little camping as we do. And taking a trip in something that gets 6-8 mpg is just way to much for my pocketbook.

I have owned a lot of motorhomes and here is how they turned out.

Older Mercedes in mid 80's 30' 4 cylinder diesel non turbo class A got 17 mpg no power going up hills 50-55 mph

1995 Navette with a 4 cylinder diesel 30' got 13 mpg. Again it was slow on the hills pulling my Toyota pickup it got down to 55 mph

3 Airstreams Motorhomes
20ft with 454 would get between 9 - 10 mpg
24 ft about the same
34.5 ft around 8 - 9 mpg

2 Toyota late 80's
17 mpg on the smaller one (odyssey)
(Sunrader) 17 mpg and its was a lot larger

The little motorhome would run with the traffic through the mountains with ease All fiberglass bubble top designed for no wind drag I buy and sale semi trucks and motorhomes and this was the one I would take to go pick them up. Loved it.

Chevy Eldarado class B would get about 10 mpg mid 80's

1994 Class C 35 gulfstream with 3 axles & 460 overdrive got 7.5 running with traffic 75mph from Florida to Ky. From Ky to W.va I slowed down to 55-60 and got 10 mpg

1985 Chevy class B turtle top van with 305 3 speed gets 10mpg (big disappointment)

1996 converted city bus with 5.9 diesel from Montgomery to Ohio got 13 mpg running hard It would pull down to around 55 on hills

40' Blue bird got 10 - 12 mpg with 5.9 cummins average driving in the flat and hills of W va Couldn't believe the power the bus had but it was a new 5.9 from factory with 280+ hp big intercooler etc.

2007 Ford 34' from Ohio to Oregon and Wa v10 running hard 7.5 mpg summer of 2013

1978 conversion chevy with 350 engine and 3 speed auto was excellent. Bought it with a bad camshaft. Replaced the cam with a 270/280--- about the same as a 3/4 race cam, which would get me 18 mpg. lots of power taking off towing and good mpg on top end.
I used this for towing in vehicles for yrs.

I kept the 94 ford 3 axle 35' slides class C and plan on replacing the 460 with the 280hp 5.9 cummins. Allison transmission and a auxillary overdrive this summer. This should get 13 - 15 mpg with the auxillary overdrive adde & having plenty of power in the mountains.

The 350 chevy engine is the only one that its profitable to change the cam in for better fuel mileage I have found.

The old 78 chevy van was the only one that made me happy when I pulled in a gas station. I had a 85 Chevy pu 4 x 4 305 with 4 speed standard overdrive that was excellent 20mpg. with 3.42 gears.
Very seldom do you run in to something that gets good mileage, never let it go. The pickup was rebuilt 3 times after wrecks because I knew I would never find another that would do that good.

If you get a big class A diesel the best on fuel mileage is the Detriot 11.7 series 60 . I kept a
international tractor for towing in vehicles and it would get 11 - 12 mpg. The Series 60 with the 12.7 will not get that mileage. The 11.7 is about 350 hp and the 12.7 is in the 4s -500 hp range. The 11.7 will have all the power you need
in the RV market for 8 - 1,000,0000 miles easy

No solutions
by: Dan B

This is a good site, if misery loves company. Now I don't feel so bad. And will stop thinking there is something wrong with my 83 30' Revcon 454 Chevy when only getting 7-8 mpg on my new engine -- yep, pulled the old engine and had it completely rebuilt -- but a funny thing, the old engine was getting 9-10 mpg ???? I was running synthetic oil in the old engine but it was using a quart of oil every 300-500 miles -- do the math.

After the rebuild it took 3,000 miles before the new engine seated and does not use oil like that anymore. But, I have trying to use up the storage of regular oil I had before going to the Synthetic again. What does this mean? Well, after reading the comment here the common thread for and actual increase in MPG is the synthetic oil.

I promise to write back after my first big trip with synthetic oil on the new engine. Even if you can get only a 1 MPG boost, at todays gas prices and being anxious about the next fill up that 1 MPG would give me an extra 54 miles to find a gas station.

If you have an engine that is not using up oil like gas then it would seem, from the reports here that using the synthetic oils would be the right move. Some inflated MPG and mental averaging does not count, guessing is worse and is like denial. The gassers need help, so does anyone, or has anyone found a solution beyond the Synthetics?

newer motorhomes?
by: Anonymous

From the few I have talked to that have the new motorhome -- 2000 and up they are not getting much better than what the older coaches are giving. It seems to me that when you get over 30 you should go to diesel and it seem they all stay right in the 10-11 mpg range no matter what, towing or not.

A couple of people giving upwards to 15 mpg for a gas motor need to check the accuracy of their odometer -- I'm thinking the math is either off or the odometer is. Use the mileage markers along the highway to do a simple check. Much of mpg is determined by speed -- keep it in the 50 mph range and mpg improves a lot -- you just have to put up with everyone passing you and a few, "Get the hell off the road you old buzzard", shout outs but other than that the ride is smoother and mileage better and at the end of the days travel you are actual still a civil human being.

Peace to all you travelers, Dan and remember to Praise YaHshua our Lord and Savior -- hallelujah

'96 Allegro 34', no slides, with Chevrolet 454 7.4 Liter TBI on P-30 Workhorse frame with 4 speed O/D transmission and Banks Power System, the unit has 76,000 miles. I get 7 mpg just about any time, while pulling a Geo Metro toad up and down the hill's in east TN, KY, OH, WV, VA, NC, PA, GA and the flats in FL. That includes me running the generator and dash air (yes mine does work). Tires aired to 95# and fresh water about 40 gal, and usually empty black and grey tanks with fuel tank topped off. I am sure I could increase that mileage but I run 65 and 75 mph, even up some of those hills. Now I have had episodes when less than 4 to 4.5 mpg had me crying, but it was due to fuel filters and some minor maintenance issues.

I use a full synthetic oil 5W30 and regular gas with an occasional gas additive or treatment. Keep that fuel filter clean, air filter clean, and just watch the plugs and wiring, they are known for breaking down. I once got 8 mpg but that may have been a fluke, bad math or an anomaly. I believe this is very much average for this unit or any unit with comparable attributes and similarities not just from my experience but from what I have read and others that I have spoken to (not speaking for the Ford 470, though I find them to be very close in average consumption of that precious resource known as gas). Not that this will help anyone, just wanted to give my side of the equation.

MPG Revcon
by: Anonymous

I ahve a 28' Revcon, tandem wheel and front wheel drive. On old engine, 170,000 9-11mpg. Rebuilt 454 Chevy motor, trans and new brakes, shock, wheel and tires. Edelbrock manifold and carb - first breakin miles 500, 9.5 mpg. Would not pass Calfornia smog later because of Edelbrock carb -- switched out the carb and replace it with the original Q-Jet that I kept -- passed smog then after 800 trip, mixed mountains and flats, coastal travel - 7.5 MPG. Rmember, this is the same carb I was geting over 11 mpg on the flats averaging 9-11 on the old engine, It's the smog settings that kill a lot of the MPG gains you might want. I think it is in the timing they set to make it pass smog. Burn more? Pass smog? Something is wrong here. I will reset the timing and expect to get back to 10mpg --

My wife is going to make me lie re the mileage as she keeps buying more stuff along the way. Now she is looking for a good new laptop, finding that the ones built in the USA are better than the canuck built or sold models.

Well I can tell you this climbing up Grants Pass was not all that great today in the heat and all but overall we do around 11 to 12 mpg with a 182,000KM's on a 350V8 with a Turbo either 350 or 400, not sure but I know it does not have OD.

I have a 89 Gulfstream 31 footer with a 5.9 cummins and Allison 4 speed. Recently took on the road from San Antonio to Fort Worth and averaged 10.75 miles at 65 mph throughtout the 530 mile trip. No slide out but, loaded at approximately 20K lbs with campaing gear, goodies, half tank of water (30 gals) and no cruise control, so right leg was killing me.

Looking to upgrade with new fuel pin and governor spring, amsoil in motor & rear, and give it a well needed front alignment job.

Will report back with any increases in mpg's after mods.

Go RVing.

How I got fuel economy in 34ft motorhome
by: Anonymous

I bought a 1987 34ft Holiday Rambler Aluma-lite with 65,000 miles last year. It has a 454 chev engine hooked to a THM 400 trans. My first tank of gas driving from AZ to WA I averaged 6.6 mpg. After I got there I noticed my tires were badly worn. I bought narrower tires and had the unit aligned (it was badly out of align)that actually helped gas milage slightly.

The biggest increase came from changing to a synthetic oil (I used Amsoil) but any may do, not sure. That increased my milage by a wopping 1.8mpg. I was quite happy.

When I got back home to Arizona I asked the local Amsoil dealer if changing the tranny fluid to Amsoil would help with fuel milage. He said he didn't think so but it would run 50 degrees cooler.

He did say that changing the rear end oil would help though. I did both. At this point my fuel milage was 8.8 to sometimes 9 mpg. I had the carb rebuilt and the timing changed slightly. Took a trip to Disneyland, about 800 miles roundtrip and averaged 9.6mpg. Mostly flat except in the hills of California.

Next I changed to a K&N airfilter and increased my tire pressure to 100lbs in the front and 90lbs in the rear dualies (I also have a tag along axel with a single tire behaind the dualies, which doesn't help milage any).

I think that is the reason why later large motorhomes have, for the most part, gone away from that tag along axel. I drive 58mph to 65mph depending on the road. I do not use my cruise control except on the flat. I feel like I can "feel" the engine better in the hills without cruise control.

For the most part I now get between 9.2mpg and 10.4 mpg, except in the mountains of course. I do not tow anything and I feel like this is the best I am going to get. It has just been a lot of little things with the synthetic oil making the biggest difference.

RV Miles per gallon
by: Tars

Our 1987, Foretravel Grand Villa, 36 foot gas pusher, Ford carburated 460 v8 with an Allison 4 speed, headers and Edlebroc 650 square bore carb gets up to 6.5 maybe 7 mpg holding my breath on the flat with no headwind, not heavely losded, empty tanks and little gas and no toad.

4.5 mpg loaded, full tanks, with a Jeep Wrangler toad and up and down the coast range as low as 4.5 mpg. hitting 65 mph most of the trip when on the flat and sometomes crawling up the hills at about 30-35 mph.

We can average 5 - 5.5 being slow (55-60) and careful when traveling on the freeways when loaded to the max. We normally get about 50 to 100 yards behind a big truck and stay there.

Our 1989 Ford 27' Telstar class B/C, 7.3 NA Ford/ International diesel and gets an average of 10 mpg. Like I said its a diesel which now makes us both sick if we get a good whiff of the exhaust so we drive the bigger Grand Villa most of the time. The Telstar is easier to get into smaller spaces and up into the moutains. Its our fishing hooch.

If you want good mieage the smaller the better. Diesel gets generally better fuel mileage. 5.9 diesel Cummins seem to do quite well.

More MPG
by: HiMiler

Carbureted big blocks are a real challenge. Hi flow intake and exhaust help. A good pre-emulsion carb, like the right Holley that has been torn down, trued and detailed helps. I've done that and can gain up to 10% on the carb alone. The timing chain and gears wear and stretch, losing MPG. It can matter anytime over 50k to 75k on big blocks, maybe sooner depending on oil and change cycle. The proper camshaft makes a difference. Matching ports between intake manifold and head is important. I've custom timed each cylinder spark to it's own TDC and gained MPG (due to crank inaccuracy common in older big blocks). Gears are important to keep cruising RPM's down. Watch tire pressure. Cruise control only works on flat roads, overreacts on hills. A vacuum gauge does not do it. You can see high vacuum in a lower gear but get terrible MPG. Tests were done by the EPA, DOE and others that found driving habits can reduce MPG up to a third. Towing my 5th wheel, I use a ScanGauge for an instant MPG readout to tell me when I'm doing good and when I'm wasting gas. Lower speed and coasting are big factors to stretch MPG. I got mine at scangaugesales.com. Lots of info there.

Retired auto tech. I have a 1977 Argosy by Airstream 24ft 12,500 gross with 454 BB 625 CFM Quadrajet.TH400 trans with 4:10 rear end and the best I can get after modifying the headers and fan clutch, opening the exhaust to 6"total is 8MPG.

Engine has 87,000 original miles. Went from 16.5 wheels to 16's narrower tire, higher pressure. Vehicle has Oil cooler, trans cooler,ps fluid cooler.
K&N air filter,Delo 400 30 weight oil.I looked into a gear vender but the cost would take years to pay back. I could go to OD Trans, but the TH400 has been bullet proof for years. I drive using a vacuum gauge and most of the time 65mph. Going to try 60 with cruise and see what happens.

Previous owner said he could get as high as 10 mpg with premium gas,, but I put a 6 cell HHO in and It is running about 14 on regular fuel, and I only run the unit with a draw of 17 to 19 amps..

All I did is direct the HHO into the air uptake, no conversion at all,, but apparently previous to 96 no conversion was needed..

Got 9.16mpg. Oil was still pretty clean after.
