How Do I Re-Cerify My Older Camper's Propane Tanks?

I have a 1993 lance camper they have 5-gallon tanks. What does it cost to recertify tanks? I've been using standard OPD tanks, but I know it's not safe because liquid gas can be dangerous. The tanks have to lie on their sides to fit in cavity area.

ANSWER: Greetings thanks for submitting your question on our Ask An RV Question Page.

Since your camper is a 1993 the propane tanks (cylinders) that came with it were equipped with POL (Prest-O-Lite) valves. Propane containers with these valves could no longer be legally refilled starting in 2002.

All propane cylinders must have valves equipped with QCC (Quick Closing Coupling) connectors and an Overfill Protection Device (OPD). You can use your Camper's original propane cylinders if you get the new valves installed and get your propane cylinders re-certified.

I could not tell you how much this would cost, but I suggest that you shop around. I would check with Propane Dealers and RV Repair facilities in your area to see if they are certified to do the cylinder modifications and re-certification.

I agree with you that it is not a safe practice to have unsecured propane tanks rolling around in the storage area of your camper.
