How Can I Learn What I Need To Know About RVing?

by Mark Fernandez
(Costa Mesa, California)

I was left a 26 foot Fleetwood Wilderness trailer, my truck has never had a tow hitch, what would you do?

What book or web site would help teach me how to or what to check for like hooking up to electrical, waste, water, heater , air conditioner, stove, fridge. I have never had to set up a trailer; I am used to camping in a tent.

ANSWER Greetings Mark thanks for submitting your question on our Ask An RV Question Page.

First I hope you can learn a lot by searching our website for the answers you are seeking. Let me give you some recommendations for some quality books and videos that will help get you started.

Here are some books that I highly recommend for the beginning RVer:

The Complete Idiot's Guide to RVing. 2nd Edition: By Brent Peterson. This highly rated easy to read guide walks you through the process of purchasing an RV and how to set it up for camping once you have purchased it.

All the Stuff You Need to Know About RVing By Robert G. Lowe: This comprehensive book goes into topics such as how to drive and tow an RV, how to hookup and unhook utilities from your RV, How to pack for a week or a month, how to maintain and winterize your RV, how to operate onboard systems properly and much, much, more. This one is a must-have for a beginning RVer.

The RVer's Bible: Everything You Need to Know About Choosing, Using, & Enjoying Your RV By Kim and Sunny Baker: Rather then me trying to tell you about this Gem of a book, here is a mini review from Library Journal "The Bakers (Desktop Direct Marketing, McGraw, 1995) have written the recreational vehicle guide they wished they could have read themselves ten years ago. They tackle practical concerns such as choosing the best RV, its mechanics, and things to do in it. The authors' experiences underline the importance of the safety tips they sprinkle throughout, along with occasional illustrations and checklists, loading pointers, and discussions of pests and crossing borders. There is even a section on RV equipment for the physically challenged. Enjoyable and clear enough for armchair travelers; for public libraries with large travel sections.?Alison Hopkins, Queens Borough P.L., Jamaica, N.Y. Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc."
