Can The Propane Tanks In My Older RV Be Used While Lying On Their Sides?

by William Arnold
(North Bend , WA.)

I have a 1993 Lance Camper, the old tanks lay on their sides in the compartment, I need to switch to new style OPD tanks can they lay on their sides as well?

ANSWER: Greetings William thanks for submitting your question on our Ask An RV Question Page.

I am afraid that without being able to see your current propane tank configuration, I would not be able to tell you if you can use the tanks while they are on their sides.

What I can tell you is that there is a very good chance that your current Propane Tanks can be retro-fitted with OPD Valves and re-certified for use in your camper.

For more information on the retro-fitting and re-certification process, please read the answers that I gave to the questions below.

Do Propane Tanks On RVs Need To Be Recertified After A Certain Amount Of Time?

When you are getting your propane tanks retro-fitted and re-certified, make sure you ask the technician about using them in the orientation they are currently in.

Hopefully this has been helpful to you.

Do Not Need OPD Valve
by: Richard Mead

If you have the old style lay down tanks, you do not have to switch to new tanks, there was never a lay down OPD valve made, and there was an exception made for this, your propane dealer only needs to recertify the tanks and they can furnish you with the exception letter. I had a yellowstone with these tanks and had to show the letter to get them filled
