Can Passengers Ride In A Travel Trailer Or 5th Wheel Trailer Going Down The Road?

by Anonymous

I know state laws differ; do any states allow passengers in a towed travel trailer?

ANSWER: Thanks for submitting your question on our Ask An RV Question Page.

The answer to your question is actually quite surprising. There are some states that do allow you to have passengers in Travel Trailers and 5th Wheel Trailers while they are going down the road. See the lists below. Some states have requirements you have to meet in order to do this so you should check your local state laws for those requirements.

States That Allow Riders In Travel Trailers: Arizona, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas*, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and North Carolina.

* Some restrictions check state law.

States That Allow Riders In 5th Wheel Trailers: Arizona, California*, Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas*, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon*, Pennsylvania*, South Dakota*, West Virginia and Wisconsin*.

* Some restrictions check state law for more details.

Since we are on this subject I thought it would be important to include a video tutorial done by a famous Movie and TV star on trailer safety. You should have a pencil and paper available so you can write down the important safety tips provided in this video.

:-) OK as you have probably figured out by now this was not a tutorial at all, but was actually a clip from 1954's Movie The Long, Long Trailer starring Lucille Ball and her husband, Desi Arnaz. I hope you learned something from watching and that you took good notes.

Passengers in fifth wheel
by: Anonymous

I don't think there is anything wrong with riding in a fifth wheel going down the road.. Travel Trailer bumper hitch I would say no to.. Keep good 2 way communications between the pull vehicle and passengers and your good to go.. We do it all the time.. Also have a camera in the back to see everything..

Just curious

We have a 5th wheel now & can't afford a motorhome/fifth wheel trade. Dau. & I have chronic diseases that require lots of rest, but would like to travel the West with our spouses and grkids. Riding in a truck all day is out of the question. Being able to rest on a bed would help, though it had no way to know how rough it could be.

Rough Rider

I can't imagine why anyone would want to ride in a TT or 5W while in tow. I doubt if anyone would intentionally do it twice. They are so rough riding it would be like riding a travoise behind a run-away horse.
